Community volunteering 2016
The following are just a few of the many examples of volunteering undertaken by Tarmac employees to support their local communities:
The Mount, Fleetwood
When Wyre Council put out a call for volunteers to help with planting employees from our Readymix business were quick to sign up. Some 2,000 shrubs, 65 trees and 4,300 flowering bulbs have now been planted at the Grade II registered garden, helping to restore it to its original Victorian design.
Baginton Fields School, Coventry
Finance colleagues have installed a bank of new planters, clear pathways and built some steps in the rough terrain a the special needs school to improve access for the school children.
Emmaus, Barham, Kent
A team from our Barham Contracting office helped a local homeless charity clearing overgrowth, trees and litter from around the charity shop to help provide a garden which can be used by the charity’s companions.
Waterford Heath, Hertfordshire
Anglia Readymix Commercial team joined Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and helped clear an overgrown access point to a local nature reserve. Waterford Health is a former quarry site, which is now managed by the local Wildlife Trust.
Lady Wood, Yorkshire
An ancient woodland in Yorkshire had a much needed tidy up, thanks to Concrete North and Scotland’s leadership team. The team coppiced an area of ancient woodland on the boundary of Mirfield and Dewsbury with the Mirfield Community Partnership.
Poole’s Cavern, Derbyshire
Tarmac’s Geology and Land Survey team, in conjunction with Buxton Civic Association, has undertaken a detailed surface to underground survey to produced the first accurate plan of Poole’s Cavern, fixed in position to Ordnance Survey surface detail.
Walston Primary School, Lanark
Colleagues from Newbigging Quarry helped to spruce up a local school by volunteering their time to clean, rub down and paint an outdoor pagoda in the school playground which is used for outdoor classes and activities.
Centre of the Earth, Winston Green, Birmingham
Our Communications & Corporate Affairs and Sustainability teams helped transform a inner city education centre with staff at Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust. The centre specialises in teaching and learning about wildlife, the environment and sustainable development. The teams lime washed the walls of the education centre; cleared ivy, low branches and grass from an outside mosaic mural; dug up weeds and grass from the outside amphitheatre; collected and composted a recently cut meadow; cleared pathways of weeds; and moved two piles of woodchip to create parking space for four cars.
Hindlow, Derbyshire
Our Hindlow Quarry near Buxton now boasts a 75m long piece of land art produced by contemporary artist Eddy Dreadnought. The land ‘drawings’ are visible in the dormant quarry bottom and were created by scraping the compressed and weathered floor to reveal lighter limestone fragments underneath, producing a stunning effect. The artwork is visible for local residents along with on a new explanatory sign.
Solihull, Birmingham
Tarmac’s Marketing team has supported three local schools, Lyndon, Ninestiles and Cockshut Hill, to give the Year 8 students a ‘live’ web design project in conjunction with a business partner. The work was across two full terms.
Buxton, Derbyshire
Employees supported a visit from the mental health charity, the Buxton Grapevine Wellbeing Centre, allowing the visitors to enjoy first-hand experience of the quarrying industry.
Strathaven, South Lanarkshire
Volunteers from Bellshill’s Contracting department helped local school Wester Overton Primary in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire, improve their playground. The team tidied up the area by gardening, clearing large patches of weeds, and painting and preparing planters for the children. A massive 18 tonnes of spoil was cleared from the playground.
Solihull, Birmingham
Volunteers from our Legal team stepped in to provide their local day care centre with a much-needed lick of paint for the Green Acres Centre in Solihull. The centre provides support and services for physically disabled adults and their carers.
