Award Winners – MPA Health and Safety Awards 2016

Tarmac’s continued focus on improving health and safety performance was recognised at the Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health & Safety Awards 2016, where our Building Products team won the Blue Circle Transport Award for improving the vehicle and pedestrian movement plan at its Glasgow DSM Mortar plant. The team’s submission focused on the challenge of increasing onsite capacity and subsequently traffic, and how we ensured we reduced our risk.

Through detailed risk identification processes, including site walks and hazard spotting the team developed a new movement plan to reduce the risk of an accident. This was further helped by introducing technology, such as CCTV and automated barriers and focusing on safety behaviour by involving our hauliers in training and safety meetings.

The outcome was an improved and safer site, with everyone more engaged in safety. The learnings are already being shared across the business to help us towards zero harm.

The Building Products team also received another award of merit for work on an engineered process to automatically measure block heights at Newark Topblock which reduces operator exposure to moving machinery.

Marine picked up a Highly Commended certificate for our ongoing work around contractor engagement. This initiative has focused on ensuring contractors feel part of our business, which has been achieved by developing contractor forums, introducing a new ‘bridging’ process for vessel dry docking and more face-to-face site contractor reviews.
